The Philadelphia Phillies bullpen suffered a major setback on Sunday as Major League Baseball announced that Jose Alvarado of the Phillies has been suspended for 80 games for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). The left-handed reliever was found to have tested positive for exogenous testosterone, violating MLB’s drug policy.

The Phillies released a statement expressing their disappointment but reaffirming full support for MLB’s joint drug prevention and treatment program. “The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball’s joint prevention and treatment program and are deeply disappointed to hear the news about Jose’s violation today,” the team said.

Since joining the Phillies from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, Alvarado has been one of the most effective relievers in the league. He improved his ERA significantly, dropping from 4.20 in 2021 to a stellar 1.74 in 2023. Though his ERA increased to 4.09 across 66 appearances in 2024, Alvarado remained a crucial part of Philadelphia’s bullpen.

This season, Alvarado appeared in 20 games, maintaining a strong 2.70 ERA with seven saves and 25 strikeouts. He also showed a personal touch, recently honoring his mother on Mother’s Day with a heartfelt message on his cap.

However, with Jose Alvarado of the Phillies suspended for 80 games due to a positive PED test, the team now faces a significant challenge. Philadelphia will have to rely heavily on bullpen arms like Jordan Romano, Matt Strahm, and Orion Kerkering to fill the gap left by Alvarado.

As the Phillies hold a 27-18 record and sit second in the National League East Division, this suspension could impact their playoff hopes. Alvarado will not be eligible to appeal the suspension, meaning he will miss the next half of the season.

This development is a tough blow for the Phillies and highlights the ongoing fight against performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball.
